A small office in Asakusabashi.
Originally,
the space had no partitions,
and the director’s room and staff area
shared the same acoustic environment.
The client’s request was simple:
to create an independent workspace
where meetings, conversations, and daily work
could coexist more comfortably.
The real difficulty of this project
was not the construction itself,
but the balance between performance and budget.
A conventional Japanese partition system —
metal studs, gypsum board, and acoustic insulation —
could improve sound control to a certain extent.
However,
it would not achieve the level of acoustic separation
the client truly needed.
The ideal solution was a high-performance
double-glazed tempered glass system,
similar to those commonly used in Europe,
with inert gas sealed between the glass layers
to improve acoustic and thermal performance.
But importing such systems through standard channels in Japan
would have exceeded the client’s budget significantly.
To make the project possible,
we traveled to Shanghai ourselves,
carefully selected the appropriate materials locally,
managed procurement directly,
and imported the glass to Japan independently.
Installation also became a challenge.
At first,
we considered carrying the glass panels manually
up to the fourth floor.
But after evaluating the risks,
we decided safety had to come first.
Eventually,
a crane company was arranged,
and after many unexpected complications,
the glass was finally lifted and installed successfully.
To be honest,
this project was our first attempt
at handling a process like this.
Financially,
it was not profitable.
We even lost a small amount in the end.
But architecture is not only
about efficiency or margins.
We believe that maximizing the client’s needs
within real-world constraints
is one of the most important social responsibilities
of a designer and builder.
This project taught us a great deal.
And because of that experience,
we know the next one will be even better.

もともとこの空間には間仕切りがなく、
社長室とスタッフエリアが、
同じ音環境を共有している状態でした。
クライアントから求められたのは、
会話や打ち合わせ、
日常業務が互いに干渉しすぎることなく、
快適に共存できる、
独立したワークスペースをつくること。
このプロジェクトで最も難しかったのは、
施工そのものではなく、
「性能」と「予算」のバランスでした。
一般的な日本国内の間仕切り工法 —
軽鉄下地＋石膏ボード＋吸音材 —
でも、一定の防音性能を
確保することは可能です。
しかし今回、
クライアントが求めていた音環境を実現するには、
それだけでは十分ではありませんでした。
理想的だったのは、
ヨーロッパで広く使用されている、
中空層にガスを封入した
高性能な複層強化ガラスシステム。
高い遮音性と断熱性能を持つ一方で、
日本国内で通常ルートにて導入すると、
予算を大きく超えてしまう状況でした。
そこで私たちは、
自ら上海へ赴き、
現地で仕様選定・調達を行い、
日本へ輸入するという方法を取りました。
施工もまた、
簡単なものではありませんでした。
当初は人力で4階まで搬入することも
検討していましたが、
安全性を再検討した結果、
最終的にはクレーン会社へ依頼する判断を行いました。
幾つもの調整やトラブルを経て、
ガラスは無事に4階へ吊り上げられ、
設置まで完了することができました。
正直に言えば、
このプロジェクトは、
私たちにとって初めての挑戦でもありました。
結果として、
大きな利益には繋がりませんでした。
むしろ、
利益はほとんど残らなかったと思います。
それでも、
限られた条件の中で、
できる限りクライアントの要求に応えようとすること。
それは、
設計者・施工者としての
大切な社会的責任の一つだと、
私たちは考えています。
今回の経験から学んだことは非常に多く、
この挑戦が、
次のプロジェクトを
より良いものにしてくれると信じています。
