Located off the southern coast of Taiwan, Xiaoliuqiu is a small coral island shaped by tropical sunlight, humid ocean winds, lush vegetation, and a slower sense of time.
Although geographically part of East Asia, the atmosphere of the island often feels closer to Southeast Asia — warm, open, and deeply connected to outdoor living.
The client first encountered this feeling while traveling in Malaysia, where she became fascinated by the spatial character of tropical colonial architecture.
Verandas that blur interior and exterior.
Spaces filled with wind and filtered light.
A lifestyle closely connected to nature.
She felt that Xiaoliuqiu, despite being located in Taiwan, shared a surprisingly similar atmosphere with the Nanyang region.
This project began with a simple question:
Could that spatial memory be reinterpreted within the context of Xiaoliuqiu?
Starting from the client’s hand-drawn sketches, we developed the project through 3D spatial modeling, carefully reorganizing and reconstructing the space while working closely with a local Taiwanese construction team throughout the realization process.
Rather than applying a superficial tropical style, we aimed to create architecture that genuinely responds to the island’s climate and everyday way of living.
Deep roof overhangs.
Veranda-like transitional spaces.
Windows arranged to guide airflow rather than block it.
Intentional room left for plants and daily life.
White surfaces that soften the strong southern sunlight.
These elements are not merely aesthetic choices; they are environmental responses to the site itself.
Inside, materials such as rattan, wood, patterned tiles, and greenery were carefully layered to blur the boundary between hostel and café, creating an atmosphere that feels less commercial and more like staying in a quiet tropical residence.
Equally important to the project was the integration of design and construction.
Using 3D models as a shared language, we collaborated closely with local craftsmen to refine dimensions, details, textures, and spatial balance directly on site.
For us, that collaborative process itself is inseparable from the architecture.
We believe meaningful spaces are not created by drawings alone, but through the accumulation of climate, site, craftsmanship, people, and time.
台湾南部に位置する離島・小琉球。
珊瑚礁によって形成されたこの小さな島には、強い日差し、湿度を含んだ海風、熱帯植物、そして時間がゆっくり流れるような独特の空気があります。
地理的には東アジアに属しながらも、その気候や空気感には、東南アジアの「南洋」に近い感覚が残っています。
施主は、マレーシアを訪れた際に出会った南洋コロニアル建築の空間体験に強く惹かれました。
ベランダと自然がゆるやかにつながり、風と光が生活の中へ入り込んでくる空間。その記憶を、小琉球という土地の中で再解釈できないか。そこから、この計画は始まりました。
本プロジェクトは、施主による手描きスケッチを起点に、私たちが3Dモデリングを通して空間を整理・再構築し、台湾現地の施工チームと密接に協働しながら完成した、「南洋ベランダコロニアルスタイル」のゲストハウスです。
私たちは単に南国的な意匠を再現するのではなく、小琉球の気候そのものに応答する建築を目指しました。
深い庇。
半屋外のように連続するベランダ。
風を遮るのではなく導く窓配置。
植物と共存する余白。
強い日差しをやわらかく受け止める白い壁面。
それらは装飾ではなく、この土地で快適に過ごすための「環境の設計」でもあります。
内部空間では、ラタン、木、タイル、グリーンなどを用いながら、宿とカフェの境界を曖昧にし、まるで南の島の別荘に滞在しているような、静かで生活感のある空気を目指しました。
また、本計画において重要だったのは、設計と施工を分離して考えなかったことです。
3Dモデルを共有言語としながら、現地職人と寸法や納まりを現場で調整し、素材感や空気感まで含めて、一緒に空間をつくり上げていく。そのプロセスそのものが、この建築の一部になっていると考えています。
建築とは、図面だけで完結するものではなく、土地・気候・人・施工・時間が重なり合うことで、はじめて息づくもの。
